Realmatch: Meet Your Job Match
If you’ve ever used a job search engine like one of those HotMonsterBuilder sites, you’ve probably seen the hundreds of “matches” that have nothing at all to do with what you searched for. When I was searching for my own job, I completely gave up on using those search engines to find a meaningful job match. If I had only known about Realmatch, then maybe I could have saved myself a lot of grief. With more than a dozen endorsements from major publications and career sites like Business Week, Mashable, and Fast Company, Realmatch has made quite a splash in the crowded job search engine market. It looks to be popular with recruiters and employers, because it’s free to post jobs, and the only costs are incurred when a matching candidate is chosen. This leads to two benefits for job seekers. First, there are more jobs to choose from, and second, the matches will be a better fit for the candidate’s skills and abilities. It’s obviously working, … [Read more...] about Realmatch: Meet Your Job Match

The Day I Cleaned the Refrigerator at Work
The stench was horrendous. As everyone walked through the office door, they couldn't help but comment."Ewwwwww, what is that?"After searching for dead animals and rummaging through garbage cans, we finally found the culprit: the refrigerator. Specifically, someone's two-week-old Chinese leftovers. In typical corporate fashion, a call was placed to the janitorial department to take care of the problem. One day and several sprays of Windex later, the cleaners deemed the problem solved.Guess what happened the following week...The smell returned. Now I'm a fairly patient person but I do reach a point where I don't look back and take matters into my own hands. The next day I arrived at work 30 minutes early with a bucket and heavy-duty cleaning supplies in tow. I rolled up my shirt sleeves and made the fridge look - and smell - as good as new.As my officemates began to trickle in they all took notice of the fridge.Word began to spread that I had taken care of the problem. Most people were … [Read more...] about The Day I Cleaned the Refrigerator at Work

We're ALL Role Models Now. And It Sucks.
In our youth, there is an unspoken feeling of acceptance for our mistakes. We know that there are consequences, but we’re young, foolish, and usually forgiven. It’s ok to mess up, it’s ok to rebel, and it’s all ok because we have our adulthood to make up for it. Except now we’re adults. We have bills, mortgages, kids (well, just a cat for me), and other basic responsibilities. And it feels as though Big Brother is watching our every move. Are you really going to buy that candy bar? Are you really taking an extra 15 minutes for lunch? Are you really not going to participate in the afternoon discussion during your leadership training course? Every vice or laziness that I used to give into- well simply because I felt like I could make up for it later- no longer feels like I have that luxury. And if I dare consider to buy that extra something or don’t participate like I should in a work-related discussion, the guilt that accompanies giving into that vice … [Read more...] about We're ALL Role Models Now. Work Lyrics: what a mess, on the ladder of success
As a young lad I was often given heat for my fondness for the Goo Goo Dolls. (I'm still unapologetic!) It wasn't until their frontman Johnny Rzeznik told me that he grew up idolizing The Replacements that I became familiar with Paul Westerberg's music. With tight songs that blend classic and punk rock, it's fair to say I was an instant - albeit - late blooming fan.The Replacements are best represented by “Bastards of Young,” a song that got them banned from SNL due to their "inebriated state." Whether you're working in the fields or in an office, we all can relate.God, what a mess, on the ladder of successWhere you take one step and miss the whole first rungDreams unfulfilled, graduate unskilledIt beats pickin cotton and waitin to be forgottenWe are the sons of no one, bastards of youngWe are the sons of no one, bastards of youngThe daughters and the sonsClean your baby womb, trash that baby boomElvis in the ground, therell aint no beer tonightIncome tax deduction, what a … [Read more...] about Work Lyrics: what a mess, on the ladder of success
