Roger Clemens’s latest contract is not only bad for baseball – it’s bad for you.
Now for those of you who know me, I was born with pinstripe blood. However, as the years go on, and I find myself older then many of the players on the field, I’ve begin to distance myself from watching a bunch of grown men throw a ball. For the most part, it’s the excessive greed that turns me off.
Case in point, the Yankees’ resigning of Roger Clemens. Granted, he’s one one of the best to ever play the game. However, does any human being deserve to make such a ridiculous sum of money?
Stats to make you sick:
– Contract is for $28 million-plus
– $10,500 per pitch
– $143,000 per inning
Those numbers are based on conservative guesstimates. It’s quite possible the guy comes up lame after one inning and laughs all the way to the bank.
Do you realize that this mere mortal can throw 10 pitches and make more money then most of this blogs’ readers make in a year!? Not to mention, many folks are not living out their childhood dreams.
Another clause in the Rocket’s contract is that he does NOT have to be with the team when he doesn’t start. Imagine if the guy in the cube next to you was allowed to telecommute and sit on his couch for 4 out of 5 days while you schlep into the office?
No one is suggested the workforce to become more rigid than it already is, however, when rules are bent for individuals, the entire organization usually suffers. It might be unfair to compare baseball to let’s say media or accounting, but a job’s a job and the a lot of the psychology is the same.
The pride of the Yankees has been tarnished. I hope the reputation of any big boss who would play favorites gets tarnished too.
I’m pretty good at what I do too. Maybe I should demand a two-hour lunch break. Or the right not to wear this darn tie everyday. Am I alone? Do you guys think that "hired guns" should get what they want if they have the ability to "better" the team?
