There are times when there is not enough work to fill the 9-5 work day. This can be a welcome break if the usual is to bogged down under more than you can handle, but if it regularly occurs, it can get very boring. If you find yourself in this situation and are regularly bored at work, do this:
Ask for more work
There may be other assignments or tasks that you can take on board and this can be a good way to win favour with those you’d like to impress.
Training
Not only fills the time but expands your knowledge, skills and abilities and may lead to involvement in more aspects of the companies practice and possible promotions.
Volunteer to help
Helping your colleagues can be a valuable networking tool. A helping hand offered when dearly needed is often appreciated and seldom forgotten.
Desk exercises
Keep yourself healthy by checking out online exercises that you can do while at your desk. Doing this with even some simple stretches can do wonders to clear your mind, and relax and refresh your body.
Ask the boss for a pay rise or improvement in benefits or office perks
The adrenaline kick than can rise from this one will kick into touch any feelings of boredom, though not to be used on frequent basis without annoying your boss!
Speed work challenge
If you have work but finding it mundane, set yourself challenges such as completing a set amount of tasks in a certain time, adding some excitement to what you do.
Make use of the time to chat and get to know your colleagues better, fostering better working relationships with them.
Look for other jobs
There may be a reason you’re bored. Maybe it’s time to make the leap. If you’re bored due to lack of work, make the most of the time to search the ads, write the CV and fill in the application forms.
Clear and tidy your email accounts
Get the backlog down and create a good system!
Learn a new skill
There’s plenty of ways to learn something new, such as a language, using online tools, books and cell phone apps.
Write a letter
Make someone’s day, when they receive a letter in the post and realise you’ve taken the time to craft and send it to them.
Research future purchases
Save money by researching the items you want to buy and finding the best prices. Also save time, eliminating the grocery shop after work by ordering your groceries online and having them delivered to your door when you are home.
Book a holiday
Dream of distant shores and make it a reality to look forward to.
Read
Even if you don’t want to get caught reading a book, its never been easier to catch up with your favorite authors by using online and cell phone app e-readers. Alternatively, subscribe to online journals, magazines etc.
Social networking
Just remember to keep it in check!
Pay bills
Pay your bills, and other mundane stuff, such as filling in forms that takes up precious free time at home.
Grow and care for a bonsai tree
Cultivate your green fingers!
Beat your highest score on a online or phone app game
A good challenge, when everything else is done!
