When military personnel retire, it can sometimes be quite a transition to go work in the private sector. Luckily, there are veteran friendly companies, both large and small, who understands the value that veterans bring to their industry.
Veterans bring a high level of training, certifications and experience to many different types of veteran friendly companies. Veterans have shown to have great work ethic, valuable skills, availability to free additional training, a one-time relocation benefit from Uncle Sam, and many come to the company with a valuable credential of existing military security clearance.
Higher standard and work ethic
Veterans tend to bring a higher standard and work ethic to civilian companies. Some of the skills that employers find more veterans excel in over civilian workers include a better-disciplined approach to work, great leadership skills, great ability to work as a team to bring together pieces of a project and very good communication skills with a wide diversification of people.
Traits more prevalent in veterans
While this is an average, veterans also excel in traits such as problem solving skills, an ability to perform under pressure and have a great respect for their peers as well as their superiors. They also have a great integrity for their work and bring a unique global perspective to companies that many civilians do not possess. Veterans are not just retired soldiers; they are also supply chain experts, technicians, auditors, nurses and skilled laborers.
Veteran friendly companies save on training costs
Not only do veterans come on board with previous training and certifications in a skilled trade, but veteran friendly companies save on training and education expenses by being a G.I. Bill-approved company and enabling their veteran employees to use their G.I. Bill benefits for additional career-related training.
Relocation cost savings
Service members separating from active military duty receive a one time, government paid relocation to anywhere in the United States. This allows a veteran friendly company to interview a service member at a military job fair, offers him/her a position anywhere in the U.S., and can relocate that newly retired veteran without paying relocation fees. The veteran has up to one year from the date of separation to take advantage of this benefit. There are many special skilled military members currently overseas that will be separating from the military within a year, looking for a great civilian job in the U.S.
Security clearances are valuable credentials
Government and Dept. of Defense contractors value and actively recruit veterans. These veteran-friendly companies, such as DynCorp, require their employees to hold security clearances. Veterans holding a military security clearance have great advantage in using that credential to gain skilled jobs over civilians; many times stepping into the equivalent job that was held in the military.
Veteran-friendly companies know the benefits of investing in military talent by hiring veterans to deliver quality service to their customers. In fact, there are more than 5,000 veteran-friendly eligible companies with yearly revenues of over $500 million and countless smaller veteran friendly companies all helping veterans integrate into the private sector while still utilizing their existing skills.
