One of the few perks I truly appreciated when I was a “worker bee” was being able to listen to music. For most, it makes the day go by faster, is a welcome alternative to office gossip, and lightens moods. And it doesn’t cause employers to have to shell money out of their pockets to provide a win-win situation for all involved.
Even scientific studies suggest that music has the ability to “soothe the savage beast” and serve as therapy in an array of scenarios. If you haven’t tried it, don’t knock it!
Whether you’re dealing with an “achy-breaky heart”, boogie fever, or a manic Monday, here’s what Jen recommends…
The 9 to 5 playlist
1. SHOUT—By Tears for Fears—Okay, so I may be dating myself with this one, but it’s an oldie but goodie! Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, the music is awesome and the refrain rocks! “Shout, shout, let it all out, these are the things I can do without!”
2. Soldier of Love—By Sade—She’s back on the scene after a long hiatus, and she makes audiences remember her former joy and mass appeal! Like all her music, this one will make you want to pump up the volume! But don’t— remember where you’re at.:-) Besides, chances are that this haunting tune will replay in your mind hours after you’ve clocked out.
3. New York State of Mind— By Billy Joel—You’ll love this bluesy tune and Billy’s musical approach. It’s more than a song, it’s a statement.
4. Toni Braxton’s “Secrets” CD—Pick a tune. Any tune. Because chances are, you can’t go wrong here. Every song is performed beautifully with words and emotions we can relate to regardless of age, race or religion.
5. Don’t Worry, Be Happy!—By Bobby MCFerrin—You gotta’ love the simplicity of this tune that reminds us not to take ourselves or life’s ups and downs too seriously. It’ll give true meaning to the expression, “whistle while you work.”
6. Beat it!—By Michael Jackson—What list would be complete without music from the King of Pop? And admit it, this phrase is one I’m sure you’ve wanted to express to annoying co-workers and a bothersome boss.:-)
Well, there you have it folks. Any must-listen-to music I missed? Do tell…
