Office Christmas Party – Do’s and Don’t’s!

The office Christmas party is one of those things that can be heaven or hell! Here are a few ideas for dealing with the office Christmas party:

Don’t Feel Obliged

Unless your party is within work time, don’t feel obliged to go. You can politely decline. Office Christmas parties are not everyone’s idea of fun so don’t feel that you have to go, or give in to pressure; just let people know you are not available.

Go Steady On The Alcohol

Alcohol is one of the biggest reasons for red faces and embarrassment the day after an office Christmas party. Make sure you eat well before or during the party and limit your drinks.  In the excitement of the moment it can be tempting to drink and be merry but you don’t want to be that member of staff throwing up in the corner or hitting on their boss!

Spreading your drinks over the course of the night and having a limit will enable you to call the shots, have fun but not end up doing something you wish you hadn’t! We have all heard horror stories about people why didn’t feel like they could go back to their job after their behavior at a Christmas party!

Hold your Tounge

The more relaxed atmosphere of an office Christmas party, coupled with alcohol can lead people to say things they wouldn’t normally say. Give in to the temptation to tell your colleague what you really think of them. It may feel good in the moment, but you will regret it!

Mingle

If you decide to go, it is a good idea to mingle and talk to people you might not normally get a chance to chat to. Letting your hair down and enjoying some out of work chat can help you to forge new relationships at work and help others to see another side to you.

Tread Carefully

If this is the one time of the year that you have the opportunity to hang out with your office crush, tread carefully. Flirt and have fun but beware of crossing boundaries. Many romances have grown from meeting in the workplace but there is nothing more embarrassing than laying your heart on the line at work to find out that the object of your affections doesn’t feel the same way! Don’t forget, you will need to see them every day at work after the Christmas party!

Have Fun

All things considered, if you decide to attend your office Christmas party… have fun!
