You’ve come to a point where your job no longer holds any interest, or you’ve progressed as far as you can and now thinking you would like to find a new job and pursue a new career. The problem is, you’ve no idea what you’d like to do instead. Changing careers is not something you undertake lightly and you want to be sure that you’ll be working in something you feel passionate about. And that’s the root of the problem, you’re not sure if you are passionate about anything that could be a new career. If this sounds like you, here are some tips and advice that can help you find a passion for a new career. Step Back. You need to get a good view of your options, where you stand, and where you can go. Take a step back from your life and try and view it objectively. Ask others who know you well if they can see aspects of yourself that you nay not see so clearly yourself. Finding a passion is not something that can be forced. Stressing about it will only cloud your mind with negative thoughts and stop you being open to new ideas and opportunities that may come your way. Become Active in Passive Interests. Do you have interests, but only engage in them on a passive level? For example, do you enjoy property programs on the television, and find yourself drawn to articles in magazines on the same subject? And can you lose yourself for hours working on DIY projects in the home? If so, you could consider developing this interest into more? This could be advertising in a local newspaper or on a notice board as a part-time handy-man, and if you find yourself enjoying this work and want to develop it further, consider enrolling for a part time or evening course in training that could help expand your part-time job into a full-time career. Re-look at Interests You’ve Let Go. Due to the demands of modern life and responsibilities of adulthood, many interests that we once had get left behind. Look at what made you happy as a child. Can any of these be rekindled and become the basis for new career options? Encourage Curiosity. Develop an open mind to trying new activities and be open to different ideas. New activities can lead to a new passion, so practice saying ‘yes’ when the opportunities arise, and actively seek out new experiences. Voluntary work is a great way to try out an idea without having to take the leap into a new job, finding out if what you enjoy as a pastime, translates well into work. Look for volunteering options that reflect subjects that could be of interest to you and, before deciding if it’s a good choice, do it for a long period so as to get a better reflection of how it would be as a regular job.
