It’s so hot here…fill in the blank. It’s so hot here I’m actually working to avoid mowing. But in true writer’s procrastination mode, I’m also finding many ways to avoid writing. Has the heat drained your brain and energy, too? Well, I’m on my usual shopping sites and IM-ing other folks who are in work-avoidant mode. But I realize I need to expand my time-waster repertoire, so I turned to an expert. Countess Blow-Off-Work (who also happens to be a writer) hooked me up with some Web sites. Some of the following I’ve (and you may have) seen, but several were new to me. (Disclaimer: I did pick those sites or sub-site that were rated PG. I’m NOT responsible if you venture beyond and get sent to the Principal’s office.)
If you are eying the donuts at work and murmuring, “Nom, nom…,” you are probably a frequent flier on icanhascheezburger.com (or lolcats). It’s been around awhile, but if you’re unfamiliar, it’s a site with pictures of cats with funny captions. You can submit your own pix with captions or make them up for “stock” photos. The cheezburger “franchise” has expanded to other sites, including Happy Chair is Happy, where people have shot pix of faces on inanimate objects. I really, really hope I never get that bored.
The Countess is fond of games. (Always remember to kill the sound while playing in tight spaces at work). The Yeti smacking the penguins is an oldie. But check out the Penguin’s Revenge. Then there’s the paper-airplane throwing game, FlightSimX Paper Airplane. It’s beyond addictive.
Some people I know even play roulette, slots, blackjack and other online gambling games! Hey, why not make money while you’re making money!?
If games aren’t getting you through till lunch, here’s a couple sites loaded with time-killer potential. I am bored.com has endless places to be distracted. I found Pictures of Clothing Made of Food. (Warning: Don’t try this on your co-workers.) Pointlesssites.com is also filled with opportunity. One of the pointless sites is gotryiton.com. People submit pix of themselves in outfits and ask for viewer feedback. I was amazed at the outfits (uh, you’d really wear that out of the house?) AND that the majority of those commenting were so nice.
You know what? I actually got this post done while checking out time-wasting/work-avoiding Web sites. Now, share some of yours. It’s too hot to use your brain for real stuff.
